Hashtags are labels used on social media sites that make it easier to find posts or information with a theme or contains specific content. It is created by including the symbol “#” in front of a word or words without spaces.
When and how did the hashtag become such a trend?
Originally called the pound sign, online use of the hashtag didn’t appear until used on IRC (Internet Relay Chat) in the late 1990s, where it was used to create and categorize groups. The hashtag craze we know today didn’t begin until 2007, when Chris Messina tweeted out to his followers, asking how they felt about using the pound sign to group conversions:
Hashtags play a crucial role in developing an interest in your social media accounts and are used on a number of social media platforms, most commonly, Twitter and Instagram. So why are hashtags such a big deal?
One of the main reasons hashtags have gained such a reputation on social media is because of their ability to help marketers and businesses create targeted campaigns. When you post about a promotion, then your followers will use that same hashtag, then their followers will use it, and so on. Hashtags create great visibility for a campaign and help you reach your target audience by using relevant hashtags that you know your audience is already following.
When used to promote an event or giveaway, the hashtag not only connects you with your followers but your followers with each other. A good example is #TheExperience2018 #mazigiveaway
With the entire world at our fingertips, searching about breaking news instantaneously is easy. Because of this, many political movements create a hashtag for their cause. This works basically the same as event promotion
From a user perspective, hashtags allow people to find posts that are relevant to their interests and interact with other social media users who share those interests by joining the conversation about hashtag XYZ. From a business perspective, it is your chance to be noticed in such a conversation and establish your company as a voice for certain topics. Knowing where, why, and how to hashtag can change your social media game and presence tremendously.
Searching a hashtag pulls results for each post using that hashtag. Using a hashtag helps you reach your target audience, and likewise makes it easier for others to find your information. Hashtags are being used by more and more platforms, impacting the amount of information put directly in front of social media users. There is too many information. There is too many information out there but using a hashtag make finding information easier for social media users. A unique hashtag makes your message stand out to the users who find the hashtag valuable.
They compel an action
When a user sees a post that is of interest, they will likely spend time looking through content brought up by the hashtag. You can encourage your followers and customers to use the hashtag when they purchase/use a product or service, or when they’re at an event you’re hosting. Creating your own hashtag gives you a chance to dominate that hashtag with your brand and encourages your followers to take action.
Hashtags work. They help increase your social media presence as they make your content viewable by anyone who has an interest in your hashtag as it goes beyond just your followers. Hashtags can help you build a brand for your business or yourself by engaging with customers and joining the conversation about what’s trending. If you participate in the high-traffic conversation by discovering the biggest trending topics, you are more likely to gain great visibility to your business. The more visibility you get, the more likely you are able to create a larger audience and a larger audience exponentially increases the likelihood of fresh leads for your business.
